Slate Products

Slate is a piece of nature and you will notice how individual your piece is through the contours and colour.
One of Scotland's most popular slate is that from Ballachulish (Balla - hool - ish) and our unique clock is made from this traditional slate dating over 100 years old and reclaimed from roofs of ancient buildings on Islay. Our other products, including coasters and table mats, are made from slate originating from Spain, Wale's Snowdonia National Park and of course Islay.

We must stress that our slate products are made from natural slate, not mainstream reconstituted slate. Slate is a metamorphic rock, some 45 million years old, which contains various impurities, such as fools gold metal (black and gold interpolations created by the presence of iron) and fossil indentations. For this reason, each item is entirely unique and we kindly ask customers to appreciate that we are unable to control the colour consistency of each product. In fact, we believe this would actual detract from the naturalness of the product and its inherent natural beauty.
Because each slate is hand crafted irregularities must be expected on the surface and edges; please be aware of possible sharp edges when handling various products.

The hand crafted cheese boards has been finished with a protective acrylic resin, giving it a shiny finish, which seals and hardens the surface area making it suitable to serve foodstuffs, reduces chipping and prevents staining.

Slate products should be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

The Kildaton Cross...one of the earliest representations of Christianity in Scotland.
The 'Finlaggan' sword...dating back to the Lord of the Isles

The Isle of Islay

Unspoilt, natural Hebridean beauty at its best. Home to one of the oldest Celtic crosses in Europe and the ancient seat of the Lord of the Isles, where the ruins lie steeped in atmosphere, touched by echoes of days gone by and where the surrounding horizons remain virtually unchanged.

This unique Island is home to eight of the world’s most prestigious malt whisky distilleries, where centuries of expertise and patience have gone into creating countless individual malts, each with their own individual flavour and character, some of which take decades to mature to perfection.

Our unique Islay designs inspired by the nature and history of the island, are meticulously hand drawn and then printed onto hand cut slate. Slate is a natural rock which is formed by the action of heat and earth pressure on buried soil over millions of years. Slate is a piece of nature and you will notice how individual each piece is through its contours and colour.
