About us

Welcome to Oosie Oo Handknits. My name is Fiona Mulgrew. I live on the edge of the small coastal town of North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland. I have been a hand knitter since I was 7 years old when my grandmother taught me my first stitch. Over the years I have always had five or six knitting projects on the go simultaneously. All types of wool or 'oo' (a Scots word for wool) and making things with it, have been a life long obsession for me. At the moment I spend most of my knitting time working with the fine lace wool of the Shetland Isles or with mohair and silk combinations. I hope you find something you like...

What's in a name?

In the Scots language 'oosie' means fluffy, furry, having a good nap or pile and 'oo' means wool and 'oos' is woolen fluff from wool or cotton (The Concise Scots Dictionary 1991). My father who was a Fifer, used to say this tongue twister when anyone got fluff on their clothes:

E a a' oo?
I a a' oo

E a a' oo? Pronounce as - ee a aw oo, which means - thee / ye are all wool / fluff. And if you could manage to say it, the reply was, I a a' oo pronounced as - ai a aw oo, meaning I / me am all wool / fluff *
