Scottish mammals
Cetaceans
indigenous to Scotland include Pilot
Whales, Bottlenose
Dolphins and the porpoise.
The
family Mustelidae
is represented by badger, mink, stoats
and ermine
as well as the common weasel.
Other mammals include Seals, Foxes and Squirrels,
with Red
Squirrels more abundant than the Grey
Squirrel which has overtaken much of the UK,
especially in the south.
Scottish
bird life
Birds
of prey found in Scotland include the golden
eagle, and the red
kite, as well as the smaller peregrine
falcon and common
kestrel.
Wild
game bird species include Capercaillie, Red
Grouse, Ptarmigan, Quail, Partridge
and the Common
Pheasant
Scottish fish
Scotland's
temperate waters are home to a variety of fish species, notably salmon, trout,
skate
and rays.
Basking
sharks also frequent Scottish Waters, as well as many small sharks Dogfish
and mid-size sharks such as the Porbeagle
and the Blue
Shark.
Where to see Scottish Wildlife
It
is possible to view Whales, Dolphins, Porpoise
and Basking
Sharks in their natural environment on boat tours of the Hebridean
waters. Other good places to visit if you wish to see Scottish wildlife
include: Highland
Wildlife Park, Loch
Lomond & Trossach
National Park.

The
Scottish
Wildlife Trust (SWT) is a leading voluntary conservation organisation,
working to protect Scotland's natural environment and the 90,000 species
of animal indigineous to the country.

Highland
Wildlife Park
The
Highland Wildlife Park is a safari
park and zoo
near Kingussie, Highland, Scotland.
The park is in the Cairngorms
National Park. The
Highland Wildlife Park was opened in 1972
and has been run by the Royal
Zoological Society of Scotland since 1986. Visitors experience
Scottish wildlife past and present in the spectacular setting of the Scottish
Highlands. and after a "remit" in 2007 endangered species
from mountainous regions all over the globe. On show are a
variety of animals found in present day Scotland, animals that were once
present, hundreds, even thousands of years ago, and endangered mountain
species from elsewhere.. Visitors drive around the Main Reserve in their
cars and then move on to a walk-round area. The
enclosure home to a pack of Grey
Wolf won the ZooLex
award in 2003
for having a leading design for their wolf territory, which offers
extensive areas for them to inhabit and views of the Cairngorms
where wild wolves would have roamed until as recently as the 1700s.
The
park is open every day of the year, weather permitting.
Loch
Lomond and the Trossachs National Park
Loch
Lomond and the Trossachs National Park
is a national
park in Scotland.
It is centered on Loch
Lomond, and includes several ranges of hills, the Trossachs
being the most famous. It was the first of the two
national parks established by the Scottish
Parliament in 2002;
the second is the Cairngorms
National Park.
It
is the fourth largest national park in the British
Isles, with a total area of 1865 kmē
and a boundary that is 350 km
long. It includes 21 Munros
(including Ben
Lomond, Ben
Lui, Ben
Challum, Ben
More and two peaks called Ben
Vorlich), 20 Corbetts,
two forest parks and 57 designated special
nature conservation sites.

Royal
Society for the Protection of Birds
The
Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a British charitable
organisation which works to promote conservation
and protection of birds
and the wider environment
through public awareness campaigns, petitions
and through the operation of nature
reserves throughout the United Kingdom. The RSPB has 1,500 employees,
12,000 volunteers
and over 1 million members, making it the largest wildlife conservation
charity in Europe. The RSPB has a number of local groups, and maintains 182 reserves across
the United Kingdom.
The
RSPB has two separate groups for children and teenagers: Wildlife
Explorers (formerly the Young Ornithologists
Club) and RSPB Phoenix. Wildlife Explorers is targeted at children aged
between 8 and 12, although it also has some younger members.
