Wild Cat

Wildcat imageThe Wildcat (Felis silvestris), sometimes "Wild Cat" or "Wild-cat", looks like a larger and heavier version of the domestic tabby cat but is a distinct species with sub-species throughout Europe and beyond. Characteristically it has a broad face, very obvious body stripes and a thick, striped, blunt tail.  Wild Cats are medium-brown with black stripes, between 50 and 80 cm (20–32 inches) in length, and weigh between 3 and 6 kilograms (6–13 pounds).
Like other small cats it is a hunter of small mammals, birds, and other creatures of a similar size, and can be found both in woodland and open country.
Mainly nocturnal, the wildcat is extremely timid and very rarely seen. It lives solitarily and hold territories of about 3 km˛ each.
In the early part of last century the wildcat had been reduced to a population in the north-east of Scotland but it is now widespread throughout northern Scotland.
